Aaron Conrad, a Welding student at the Harrison Career Center, won the 12th Annual Weld-Off at Mid-East Career and Technology Center, Zanesville Campus, hosted by Zane State College, earlier this month. Seven schools took part in the competition.
Conrad was required to weld a bevel that was 22.5 degrees between half-inch plates that were 7.5 inches long. After the weld, the piece of steel was then put through a bend test, exposing the weld to see how well it was done. Cracks and air pockets may show during the test, but Conrad's weld was clean.
Conrad said the competition lasted about 1 1/2 hours. "I only had one defect that was so minute they didn't even count it," Conrad said.
