New Welding Program Offered Next School Year

The Belmont-Harrison Vocational School District is adding a new program to its career-technical offerings. Students who want to become welders will have that opportunity next school year.

The Career Center offered a welding class many years ago, but closed the program due to a lack of student interest.

"After conducting a student survey throughout our high schools, we found that the interest level for welding had definitely increased," stated superintendent Richard Schoene. "With renewed student interest, a lab already in place, and the influx of the oil and gas industry, it was just a natural fit to add a welding program to our curriculum," he added.

Students enrolled in the program will use advanced welding techniques to design, build and troubleshoot complex manufacturing solutions. They will make, cut and repair various types of metals utilizing different types of welds. They will also learn how to interpret project blueprints and specifications while applying an extensive knowledge of materials.

The class will provide students with a basic understanding of arc welding, oxy-acetylene welding and cutting, plasma cutting, carbon arc, gas metal arc welding, tungsten inert gas welding, shielded metal arc welding, fabrication, blueprint reading, welding symbols and welding safety.

Since welding will be a new program offering, students need to have their applications submitted to the Career Center by May 1st. Students need to see their guidance counselor for an application.
